When the thrust caused by the amount of air accumulated inside the suction cup is greater than the thrust exerted by the water on a floating ball, it lowers and the suction cup begins to expel air through the holes in the lid on the top of the suction cup and as the air rises, the suction cup fills again with water until its thrust is greater than the weight of the ball, pushing it against the rubber gasket and causing the suction cup to close.
